Imaan Samson, ReCreators and Inherited Light

    Who Imaan is

Imaan Samson founded the creative agency ReCreators, and Inherited Light, an ongoing archive of the experiences of millennial and Gen Z Caribbeans.

I am a Caribbean-British Storyteller hailing from Jamaica and St Lucia. Born & Bred in South London but very much in love with my Caribbean culture and people.”

    Why Inherited Light started

Inherited Light looks for the Caribbean stories that sit outside the ones most people already know, like the Windrush arrival or Notting Hill Carnival.

I started Inherited Light out of curiosity about what stories exist beyond the popular ones like Windrush arrival or Notting Hill Carnival.”

    It began in Paris

The idea took shape during an artist residency in Paris in 2023.

I enjoyed the convos with my grandparents, hearing my friends come back from the Caribbean, domino nights. Inherited Light grew from there.”

A moment to be proud of

Inherited Light launched with a £1,000 cheque from the Jamaica National Bank.

From sitting in a cafe in Paris to receiving institutional support to start something new for the culture, and for me as an artist.”

    Legacy in Motion

In 1959, Claudia Jones held a Caribbean Carnival in Camden Town Hall. Legacy in Motion took place in the room named after her: unseen archive footage, then a panel with Jahdia Spencer, Aliyah Ramatally and Marcus Ryder MBE, hosted by Imaan. Tickets were pay what you can from £5, with all proceeds going to the African-Caribbean Leukaemia Trust.

New footage of Inherited Light Vol 2 will drop at Legacy in Motion and then across socials. We got exciting things planned in 2027.”
