Carnaval Dominicano dates back to Spanish colonial celebrations and unfolds every Sunday in February, most famously in La Vega, where troupes of diablos cojuelos in horned, mirror-studded masks whip inflated bladders at spectators. The season builds to a National Parade on Santo Domingo's Malecón.
